DESIGN STATEMENT

During the field trip to the Azores, I was aware of the tensions between tourism development and ecological connectivity. Tourism development inevitably leads to economic growth and urban expansion but also damages the original ecological habitat connectivity, leaving it fragmented.

In my project, I have broadened the definition of ‘connections’ to include the relationship between people and nature. This also means a more tense relationship between human activity and nature and a need to create a new connection. Therefore, I choose urban context as my focus, as the conflict is particularly evident in this texture.

On a larger scale, potential green spaces and vacant lots are repurposed into ecological education parks, gardens, and local markets, while private gardens are improved to be more wildlife-friendly, creating a new network of human and nature interaction unique to Faial.

In specific park scale, I positioned the eco-educational park as a ‘Nature Treasure Hunt’ and divided it into four zones - Natural Resources, Animal World, Plant Kingdom, and Nursering Garden - each with points that act as clues in a treasure map, allowing them to tell a story that is specific to the Faial.

Such a connection would allow nature to be integrated into people’s daily lives, establishing an awareness of nature and ecology so that nature and society can complement each other. Thus this city can develop sustainably and maintain its longevity.

Large Scale- Reconnection of Ecological Patch

At a large scale, potential green spaces and vacant lots are being repurposed into ecological education parks, gardens, and local markets, while private gardens are being improved to become more wildlife-friendly. This creates a new network of human and natural interaction that is unique to Faial.

Specific Scale- Nature Treasure Hunt Park

Based on site analysis, this location undoubtedly possesses ecological functionality, and its location also gives it the potential to become an urban ecological park. Therefore, I positioned this area as an eco-educational park.

DETAILED DESIGN

From the sound of birds and the rustle of leaves to the touch of volcanic rock and the smell of plants. People can interact with these tangible and intangible art forms, which meet not only the practical needs of living and travelling, but also the emotional and spiritual needs of the crowd.

I incorporated local elements like volcano sculptures, mushroom sculptures, and tree houses into the eco-art installations. By using locally-sourced materials and considering their relationship to the natural environment, I aimed to evoke a sense of emotional connection and rootedness to the land.

Volcano Site

The volcanic sculpture at this station in Faial blends local geology and culture for visitors to climb and discover the volcano’s history. Wooden steps are adorned with gabions filled with native volcanic rocks, and the light blue-tinted concrete pavement evokes the ocean. The design not only creates visual appeal but also encourages visitors to engage with Faial’s natural resources and history.

Rainwater Collection Site

In this node, I have placed great emphasis on natural rainwater collection and pumping facilities. Visitors can actively participate and experience the process of rainwater harvesting and reuse, transforming a momentary rainfall into a tangible natural process. By utilising this rainwater harvesting system, I aim to promote sustainable water usage and create a more immersive and interactive experience for the park’s visitors.

Wildlife Food Site

The wooden stand features informative displays and wildlife food to enhance visitors’ understanding of the ecosystem and the need to preserve it. Meadows surrounding the sculpture provide a habitat for local flora and fauna. Sound elements, such as bird songs and insect buzzing, immerse visitors in nature. The mushroom sculpture is interactive, inviting visitors to touch and explore its unique texture and shape.

Meditation Garden

At the heart of the meditation garden lies an original tree from the site, which has been thoughtfully preserved in the design. A glass porch lets sunlight enter, making a calm area with trees all around, far away from the busy city. The gaps between the bricks also allow the paving to coexist with nature and reduce the hardness of the hard paving. It's a place where people can fully enjoy the healing power of nature.
