Project description

Revitalising Abandoned Coastal Plain Villages & Creating Resilient Coastal Ecological Barriers

This project aims to revitalise abandoned villages like São Jorge or similar degraded borders and to create resilient ecological barriers for such sites. In the case of Faja dos Cubres, the main challenges of the project are to address the ecological impact of pollution from surface runoff washing over agricultural land on the coastal boundary, as well as how to restore and protect the habitat of Faja dos Cubres in the context of tourism development. And lastly, the planned development directions for the site for the century in response to global climate change issues. Through applying sustainable design principles and using local materials, the project aims to create a resilient and environmentally friendly design solution to help protect the area's natural habitat.

SITE ANALYSIS

The island of Sao Jorge has the largest number of fajas, with more than seventy. The fajãs consist of small areas of flat terrain surrounded by cliffs. Many of them were created by ancient lava flows hundreds of thousands of years ago. Coastal Fajas are often threatened by a variety of factors such as rising sea levels, flooding and earthquakes, which are areas of high vulnerability.
