Project description

Hayden White believes"Narrative discourse is not a neutral medium for the representation of historical events and processes but a significant mode that endows those events and processes with plot, coherence and meaning". In other words, the process of the narrative is a series of subjective simulation which is full of individual expriential judgment and structural control.

Horta is a historic city with numerous buildings of cultural and historical significance. The objective of this design proposal is to establish an urban corridor by linking the historic buildings and surrounding spaces. The use of flexible furniture will allow the corridor to adapt to different needs and events. The connection of the Art Bank and Church spaces to the seafront will slow down vehicular traffic, making the area safer for pedestrians. The rooftop garden of the Art Bank will provide a green oasis in the city, providing a place for relaxation and contemplation.

I will as a narrator to tell the story of the project in Horta. As Gordon Cullen described townscape in the context of serial vision, narrative motifs will become my language.

Hostoric Town on the Altantic-Horta

The city of Horta needs a corridor to link the city's open public spaces with its historic buildings.

The seafront avenue is mostly modern, with modern buildings such as cafes and hotels, and has limited historical value.

Therefore, the new corridor is located on the second street of the old town of Horta and runs from Cafe International in the south to Church in the far north. The whole corridor helps to create a more cohesive urban fabric by connecting parks, public spaces, historic buildings and other urban facilities.

As the master plan on the right shows, the project will create a new urban corridor by connecting the buildings in the historic town of Horta and the surrounding spaces.

The corridor offers the visitor a journey through historic buildings and cultural landscapes.

Break Boundary

In the project, the concept of the break Boundary is implemented on the axis of the Bank building (public space) and the San Francisco Church.

The following status quo is set to change.

1. The Church has a height difference of over 4 metres from the garden in front of it and people must walk downhill through the pavement to access the garden, the two spaces are separated by a boundary.

2. The garden is cut off from the bank building by the road

3. The backyard of the bank building is under-utilised.

4. The bank building is cut off from the seafront space by the coastal road.
