Project description

Amateur Made is a documentary-style publication empowering non-professional design, exploring designs by amateurs and the significance of visual communication in various forms. I curate visual materials collected from the streets, discussing encounters with the word "design" from different perspectives. Emphasizing the value of free creative processes beyond graphic design, while embracing graphic design in all aspects of life.

détournement - The Football Team Poster

Faced with the two identities of "designers seeking social identity recognition" and "amateur designers driven by interests," I embarked on a reflection on themes such as "competitive awareness" and "pursuit of values." Consequently, I extracted the composition of the original poster's text and imagery, using them as inspiration to create a new poster.

I enlarged the original A4 size to A0 and produced two versions on both sulfuric acid paper and transparent PVC. These versions were exhibited within the ECA Graphic Design studio in different formats (hanging/adhering to columns).

The enlargement of the dimensions was meant to convey a visual language reminiscent of a manifesto. On the other hand, the unconventional choice of displaying the posters around columns intentionally lowered the efficiency of communication, adopting an informal approach. The intentional discord between content and form aims to provoke contemplation on the discourse of grass-root visual communication, particularly exemplified by the street flyer.

détournement - Ways of Missing

The inspiration comes from various posters concerning missing pets. They frequently exhibit certain features that are hard to decipher, resulting from design considerations or external factors. These aspects reflect the challenges inherent in visual communication within this category - Missing notice.

I devised three distinct narratives centered around the theme of "missing," with the intention of employing the design elements themselves to mirror the intrinsic design issues of the poster.

détournement - The "Volunteers Needed" Ad

The potential of Blu Tack may extend far beyond its visual appearance; it represents more of a symbolic presence. Unlike various specific-use glues, Blu Tack serves as a versatile and practical adhesive, symbolizing the "ordinary people" – not the most specialized but easily memorable and immensely valuable in numerous situations. I intend to use it as a significant symbol in this project, employing it as a symbolic "connection."

Inspired by the "Volunteers Needed" ad, I attempted to develop this form into a word puzzle game, using "Blu Tack" as the central theme to inspire associations for slogans and exploring various compositions. Diverging from the original monochromatic representation, I experimented with different colors to map emotional tendencies in language, while also guiding the reading sequence.
