Greenwashing is a dishonest marketing strategy that falsely promotes a company or product as being more environmentally friendly than it really is. My project exposes the subtleties and duplicity of greenwashing exploring who pays; both the consumer and the wider society. Greenwashing is a complex topic, by creating artefacts that highlight this area I hope to ignite a conversation to raise awareness and further educate consumers. My work explores different visualisation and communication methods in relation to greenwashing, particularly within the fashion industry asking the multi-level question: Who Pays? I use hidden images within garments as a metaphor for this. On the surface you see the ‘eco’ messages the company is promoting, underneath are the hidden truths. Brandalism is also employed to allow subtle sarcasm to draw attention to the consequences of greenwashing.
