My political approach towards design: Democratic Interiors.
Every day, the world undergoes changes, and societies are constantly shaped and reshaped before our eyes and it all begins with the struggles of humanity for the greater good. Throughout history, democracy as an institute has stood successful in promoting these efforts to reform society, aiming for a better future that we all hope for. The values of equality, freedom and a harmonious society are what I see democracy always withhold and as a designer, my goal is to imbue interiors with this essence of democracy by creating definitions of what makes interiors democratic in nature.
In my journey as a designer, I am guided by the democratic foundational value that interior design should be "for the people, by the people, and of the peopleā. It is within this that I believe the true essence of interiors is generated. To add to this, I envision democratic interiors as spaces that are open, inclusive, representative, and participatory, harmonizing society and celebrating diversity through design. This way, the democratic interiors can be rethought to foster a sense of shared purpose where people can collectively shape a better society and future.
This ensures equal participation and representation of students from diverse backgrounds, fostering inclusivity and reducing inequalities within the student community as in SDG 10 (reduce inequality) and encourages collaboration and partnerships between students, faculty, and the wider community, creating a shared space for dialogue and engagement towards achieving the SDGs (SDG 17).
