My work is inspired by the 3D immersive experience at an electronic dance music event. The visual artwork at events combined with the music creates a memorable extravaganza. This motivates me to create visuals and patterns that work harmoniously with dance music. I aim to amplify and create a space for a diverse crowd, to celebrate life through sound and art. I wish to present my work that involves the audience in an immersive, disco scenario. The beauty of combining risograph prints and digital paintings with animation in my practice reinforces the energy of the disco scene. The tunnel-like motion and hypnotic effects often observed in my animations heighten the psychedelic experience when projected on a large scale in a dark space. This tunnel-like effect is reflective of the journey physically and psychologically during a rave experience. The use of sound from my personal archives aid my practice and heighten the experience further.
‘Disco Reflection’ is a celebration of disco, colour, sound and energy. The double projections capture a multi-sensory environment of a rave, providing an audio-visual experience for the viewer. The long image created from the two projectors, which join in the corner, pulls the audience into the visual artwork with the aim to urge the viewer to dance. The texture, colour and detail within each riso print brings a uniqueness to the creation of this space. The use of the neon, vibrant colours within my prints, which punctuate the space and frame the audience in euphoric colour, were inspired by rave footage from the 90s and the roots of electronic dance music. I aim to replicate the energy of the ‘acid house movement’ through the creation of the installation, which allows a chance for the audience to party in art. This atmospheric, immersive work is informed by printmaking, technological experimentation and refinement which encourages a sense of self-reflection and happiness; equivalent to feelings evoked at a rave.
