Lynn Stuart is a multidisciplinary artist primarily working in sculpture, object making and installation. Experimentation with material form and context is the basis of her work. Using organic and industrial materials she captures moments in time related to the experience of living in society today. Stuart plays with opposing elements to create art that induces both comfort and unease. She was invited to exhibit in the Musa Pavilion at the 2022 Venice Biennale.

Artist Statement

This work represents the inherent ability of human beings finding the inner strength to hold it together, as societies adapt to life in these transformative times. The potential of renewal and connection is being explored despite inequality of income, health and status. Clay and found objects were chosen to reflect the human experience, having a familiar place in the everyday items used in our daily routines.

Pre-fired clay can be renewed with water and rest, like human beings. Moulded into anatomical forms, this resilient yet fragile substance went through several creative processes including intense pressure, moisture and heat. Glass in the form of glaze brings a reflective quality. Choosing these materials gave the opportunity to embrace imperfection through their unpredictable nature. Organic and industrial elements were used to create an installation with opposing elements, where the essence of the materials goes beyond surface qualities. This can be seen as a metaphor for the experience of living in today's world.
