The proposal is located on the corner of Cables Wynd and Yardheads, just off Great Junction street - a key location in Leith. Cables Wynd House better known as the Leith Banana Flats because of its curved shape, is of particular prominence. A post-war urban redevelopment scheme built during the 1960s, the housing was A-Listed by the Historic Environment Scotland for its excellence in ‘New Brutalist’ design. The territory of the Banana Flats feels fractured and unwelcoming, contrary to the original plans that wished to improve living and social conditions. The proposal introduces a main building of a children’s library, facilitating the early education and reading interest of young children and teenagers in the area of Leith, and Edinburgh, with a supporting community building and after-school activities space to encourage the involvement of the wider community.
The low-level spaces offer gathering and learning spaces for all people in the community, and are of the most public of the programme.
The upper levels of the tower are the library floors, with the uppermost two being for teenagers, and the lower two being for young children. The very top of the tower offers a roof terrace or open loggia, where views beyond the Banana Flats can be appreciated.
