In the Absence

Throughout the past year, I have been exploring grief and its ensuing sensibilities as a reflection of the human nature. As an inevitable part of life and ever more prevalent following the pandemic, bereavement as a subject, roots my work in a facet of mutuality for my audience’s relation. My research involves how I can construct an image that effectively conveys a narration of interiority through exploration of visual language such as colour pallets, subject matter, and materiality, as well as wider sensory considerations to install a visceral realism to the representation of otherwise intangible emotionality that evokes a reaction from the viewer.

Whilst my naturalistic style facilitates a disarming familiarity for the viewer and allows for an immediacy in perceiving such scenes of the everyday saturated with private moments of vulnerability, such research enables my work to extend beyond a two-dimensional illusion, with the aim to offer an intermediary outlet for the viewer to relate to both the painting and to myself, perhaps relieving some of the isolation of grief.
