My practice is concerned with observations of the natural environment, particularly the effects of water and light. The universality and all-encompassing quality of nature and weather is something I find stimulating, as they possess both a timelessness and ephemerality. This sense of fleetingness and capturing the movement of water within the natural environment is what I hope to recreate in my practice, using different materials to reflect instantaneous moments, and to slow down a sense of time. I am also interested in the properties of water found in its natural state, including its patterning, shapes and effect on an environment. By observing light and water during everyday occurrences, I have considered how these elements react with one another, creating interesting distortions and delicate instances. This has also made me consider the impact of human intervention with the environment, and our individual relationship to it.
Working both outdoors and in the studio, my practice is informed by location, as I allow nature and the elements to contribute the process of creation. Furthermore, through the use of documentation with video and photography, I examine the patterning and interactions of water and light within the landscape. By recreating and magnifying these fleeting moments, I try to make them permanent. Working with different materials, I enjoy exploring the properties and textures of each media, particularly their unique textures and chance elements. I create layered work through multimedia collaging, combining both natural and man-made materials, the two-dimensional and three-dimension, as well as moving and static work. This includes the use of canvas, video projection, and glass or resin work, which I often use together to create installations. My work therefore seeks to create ambient spaces for the viewer, providing a space for contemplation, immersion, and relaxation, and to slow down our observations of nature within the business of the modern age.
