Yongjie Lao

"The South of the Clouds" tells a true story set in Niukong Town, Luchun County, Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, China. In this border town located near Vietnam, Laos, and Myanmar, several ethnic minority schoolgirls grow weary of their school life and plan to skip classes. The film documents their truancy and the teacher's search efforts, presenting the events with a composed perspective. It raises thought-provoking issues, using a calm approach to explore the unnoticed contradictions and conflicts beneath the surface.
