Bio

Hello! My name is Zicheng Peng, you can also call me Penny, a freelance illustrator, printmaker and photographer based in China.

My work depicts mostly the themes of nature, plant, light or atmospheric space with the relationship of people and emotion. My daily life, photography and my feeling toward the world are my sources of inspiration. For me, illustration is an outlet to release my feeling and shed new light on the ordinary. These feelings of healing and warmth are also what I want to convey in my work.

I can work with a wide range of mediums which include hand drawing (especially using the gansaitabi painting, a Japanese watercolour pigment), digital drawing, printmaking and bookbinding, so that to create exquisite texture and delicate colour in my work.

PROJECT 1: KOMOREBI

Komorebi: a Japenese word that means the dancing dapples casted by sunlight filttering through the leaves. So this project is a series of illustrations which about those Konorebi's moments in my life, and these profound peace and sense of tranquility are what I want to capture in this project.

The illustrations are drawn with Gansai Tambi, a Japanese paint that is semi-transparent (not transparent as watercolour but less opaque then gauche), and the colour appears brilliant on the surface. At the end, a prose poem is written according to these nine illustrations

The Prose Poem

When sunlight filters through leaves, weaving delicate dappled patterns.

It’s Komorebi.

I always pursuit, capture, and anticipate this precious moment.

It hides within the breeze's gentle flow, accompanies a cheerful melody with the leaves.

And stirs the words within a book on a certain afternoon, casually weaving a new story to show.

It also hides within the petals, listening the secrets whispered by flowers.

Then pieces together those scattered light into a bouquet of flowers, and leaving back into the wind with the drifting floral scent.

If I could dance with it, run alongside it,

That would be so radiant, joyous, and tranquil.

I am already immersed in this play of light and shadow,

becoming a part of komorebi.
