Artist Statement:
My practice tests the boundaries of spontaneous material experimentation to create abstract sculptures. By taking a material and distorting its original use or shape, I push the relationship between weight, texture, repetition and buoyancy to create biomorphic shapes. By rendering materials in experimental ways, I manipulate the physicality of the form in an uncanny way to playfully impact the viewer's impression of what the work presents. For example, soft materials become hard, hard becomes soft. I am concerned with being able to ambiguate the materiality of the original objects I use in a multitude of different techniques and stages. Abstraction is key to the relationship between materials and the themes of the biomorphic that inspire me. I achieve these works through a trial-and-error process of testing a multitude of different material experimentations, while pushing the boundaries and knowledge of how mass and tension can react with materials being applied to different sculptural techniques.
