The Lost Song of the Siren
Hidden in the depths, lost in the wrecks, life lays decaying, my life, my family’s life. The Lost Song of the Siren: Couture 2024 delves into the feeling of loss, abandonment, and transparency. Ghostly shells of our former selves emerging from the wrecks, I delve into my family history from the isolated Åland Islands, and our relation to the deep blue.
From a long line of Sea Captains and Chief Engineers my family have always been heads of their field, holding the mast. However being so high only makes the fall so much worse. Through manslaughter to great travesties my family have been involved and lost their lives to some of the greatest sea tragedies in the Baltics. For my graduate collection I looked to capture the essence of the dead man walking, the ghosts of my great grandfather thawing from the ice caps and emerging from the sea. To capture the fragility and strength, the opaque with the transparency, the soft with the harsh, the contrasting life of living and dying at sea.
Working with the unconventional, my fabrics play on my concepts, working with bridal 100% silk crepe backed satin pairing it with bias cut broken straw used in millinery. Highest quality faux fur used in Couture houses trapped in 100% waxed cotton cord all hand braided and woven.
