Project description

‘Mo Innse Gall’ (Gaelic for ‘My Hebrides’) is all inspired by the Hebridean landscape and how it ties together its community, culture and industries that have evolved over many generations.

I grew up on the Isle of Islay, where my family have lived and farmed for almost five hundred years. My work reflects upon my own childhood, bringing to life the warm and light-hearted spirit of the Hebrides, alongside the juxtaposition of modern-day culture combined with tradition.

Ultimately, the collection is about celebrating heritage and origin, whilst looking at how they move forward into the future for new generations to enjoy.

I combined archive/modern-day photographs provided by Islay’s distilleries with family photographs and newspaper cuttings. I also reached out to Islay’s newspaper, ‘The Ileach’ for stories about local characters, and used articles written by my mother about our farm for ‘The Scottish Farmer’ magazine.

The collage print features upon the clothes' surface, as well as silk and cotton linings. The stories of various generations that inspired the collection are carried forward with the wearer.
