My graduate textile collection Sunset Shades harnesses joyful colour within printed and embroidered pieces. Inspiration for colour and design emerged from my own sunset photography and catwalk inspiration, with a focus on dopamine brights and gradient hues mimicking nature. Landscapes and playful visuals have influenced my design process, merging painting, collage, graphical, and tactile processes to generate feel-good, ‘happy’ designs that are joyful and expressive. Vibrant ‘dopamine’ visuals, such as the strawberries, are an important feature in my collection, linking to mood-boosting psychology. The concept of ‘scrap collage,’ has evolved throughout my design work, layering and reusing cut-out disperse dye papers to achieve printed pieces that utilise dye exhaustion methods. Collaged visuals and my sunset palette become layered and abstracted within this playful process. Material choices aim to achieve a light, summery feel, using bamboo silks and cotton fabrics. Sunset Shades incorporates the concept of ‘mini-me,’ having designs intended for both girls and womenswear fashion markets, having a ‘kidult’ approach to styling applied for S/S23.
