Project description

‘Hidden in Plain Sight’ is inspired by the urgency to reveal the true cost of chemical dyeing processes and the impact on people’s health and livelihoods and our environment. The Textile dyeing industry is responsible for 20% of global clean water pollution and the effects of fast fashion and textile waste build up is resulting in drastic changes to the natural world. Exposure to harmful chemicals is ever increasing due to the bioaccumulation of contaminants from the textile industry in the environment and in water systems. As a designer, I believe it is imperative that we tackle this issue of transparency in our field and make great efforts to make design more sustainable and non-toxic. My collection is inspired by the ways in which fabrics are made and created entirely using natural dyes and natural fabrics – I draw from cotton plants, flax flowers, and moths. I draw from the plants I am dyeing and printing with for my naturally dyed fabrics, which include, marigolds, heather, chamomile, and logwood.

My Values

Chemical Free – using naturally sourced binders and fabrics I will endeavour to create non-toxic and chemical free textiles for fashion.

Explicitly transparent – Honesty with how my products are made and why... what is their purpose and who are they helping...

Naturally imperfect – celebrating the beauty in imperfection. Helping consumers to change their perception of the value of clothing and textiles and the importance this has in our lives and on the environment.

Designer as the Activist – Taking on the responsibility as a designer to tackle climate change and create conscious and responsible designs that do not harm or destroy.

Process and making

Natural dyes take time and patience to produce colour. Processes such as scouring, mordanting, dyeing and filtrating have been resonated throughout my process, from the start of my project.

I want to discover new ways to create colour, derived from natural sources for printed textiles. Most plant matter needs to be simmered in a dyebath for several hours before extracting the dye colour.
