This small-scale landscape design intervention utilises a range of restorative environment concepts to promote opportunities for wellbeing in the local community. Situated on a lesser used section of the Union Canal, this small intervention unlocks new space for local communities to pause, relax and connect with a dynamic blue space and new shared art feature.
Repainting and uplighting the under bridge area transforms the space from a scary, dark passageway into a vibrant community gallery. Acting as a new focal point for this stretch of the Union Canal, artworks will be updated regularly by local community arts groups to reflect current events and bring to light important issues.
An integrated floating decking platform gives visitors a place to view and enjoy the new canalside gallery from.
New seating opportunities offer spaces to rest, socialise and engage with the softly fascinating visual stimuli of the canal.
A widened footpath allows for pedestrians and cyclists to share space more safely.
Improved lighting increases the perceived usability of the site especially for people considered vulnerable.
Enhanced planting design improves aesthetic value and biodiversity.
