This work is the second part of the Union Canal design project. The first part consists of an extensive site survey of Union Canal from Wester Hailes to Edinburgh Bypass using the BlueHealth Environmental Assessment Tool (BEAT), analysis, and design proposal report for this section. In the first part, I worked with four other Master's students; Sarah Evans, Caroline Wiygul, Yihong Chen, and Harshitha Pannala.
This second part is an individual design for a small-scale intervention on the Union Canal based on an ‘urban acupuncture’ approach. This project aims to raise awareness, provide inclusive access, and support recreation facilities to improve the health and well-being of site users. Three design elements are included to mitigate existing issues and maximise opportunities for people to use the blue space more safely:
1) Signage and information to provide visual access and landmark.
2) Stairs and ramps to provide inclusive access for users of all abilities and age groups.
3) Observation deck and shelter to provide more facilities to support physical activity and recreation.
