Bio

Nathaniel Cartier moved to Edinburgh from Zug, Switzerland to study Acoustics and Music Technology as an international student. He was born in France but is Swiss, British and American. He speaks English, French, German and Swiss German, and is learning Ukrainian.

Throughout his time at Edinburgh Univerity, he has developed deep knowledge in both the arts and science: actively growing and learning in the fields of live performance, composition, production, audio engineering, mixing engineering, design and programming. His undergraduate dissertation, portfolio of compositions and Scottish Odyssey tour have helped assemble all these disciplines and his knowledge into three cohesive projects.

Now officially a young, purpose-led, developing artist and entrepreneur - his goal is to travel around the world and make music with strangers, bringing out creative expression in others and turning shared experiences into music that resonates with humans around the globe, spreading love and peace in a world that is currently divided and polarised.

Graduating from the Edinburgh College of Art marks the start of his journey as an international Swiss artist.

We wish him the best of luck!

Undergraduate Dissertation: KARTIYE Mk1:

For his main Acoustics and Music Technology Undergraduation Dissertation, Nathaniel established the proof of concept behind a new device in the music industry: a performance focused stemplayer. He researched the need for such a device and also interviewed the artists Chef the Rapper (UK), Cyrano (UK), Luke Hunter (UK), OG Florin (CH) and Sento (CH).

An MVP is currently being worked on by a team of four - all of which are ECA Graduates:

Nathaniel Cartier – Director and Creator   (Acoustics and Music Technology)

Robin Leathart – Developer   (Acoustics and Music Technology)

Andreas Papearacleous – Developer   (Acoustics and Music Technology)

James Grossman – Product Designer  (Product Design)

The Scottish Odyssey Tour

In his final year alongside his Bachelor's he planned his first ever tour:

The two week Scottish Odyssey tour, where he performed on vocals, saxophone, guitar and piano and also played songs from his portfolio of compositions. The university has actively supported the Scottish Odyssey tour through the loan of various supporting items including  drones and audio equipment.

The posters were designed by Leoni Dimond, another ECA Graduate.

Nats Band (and concept)

In order to go on his Scottish Odyssey tour, Nathaniel decided to bring together a band of talented musicians to form "Nats Band". For his June 2023 Scottish Odyssey Tour, Nats Band consisted of:

Mark Sandford - Bass   (Music Technology)

Alexander Farrow - Guitar   (Civil Engineering)

Ifeanyi Ezinmadu - Keys   (Bachelor of Music)

Ethan James - Drums   (Bachelor of Music)

The concept:

Nats Band is a session band to perform with and support frontman artists live. A solo artist or rapper could use Nats Band in a live performance or tour if they were looking for a band sound.

The band is managed by Nathaniel Cartier.

Jazz Bar - First UK Headline Show & Painting

In his first ever UK headline show, Nathaniel performed with his session band Nats Band. The last piece of the show incorporated a unique live painting event,  which was advertised as something no one had ever seen before:

Nathaniel and Nats Band did a free jam, and then as a complete surprise to the band, Nathaniel asked each band member to step down one after another to paint on the canvas whilst the rest of the band kept playing. This was done in front of the live audience in a (exciting high-stress) dynamic environment. Once the music stopped, the audience was also  invited to paint on the canvas  to complete the artwork

Nats Band produced a community artwork that was created together to form the official Nats Band painting.

Love Odyssey

For his portfolio of compositions he composed, recorded and produced the first version of his upcoming Love Odyssey album.

The album represents his emotional journey throughout his student years at Edinburgh University and encompasses various stories relating to modern love. If you want to download it, head to the Cartier Music website linked at the top of the page!

The Edinburgh Collective
