About Me

My name is Matt Parkes, and I am a sound designer, composer, and performer currently based in Edinburgh.  I am currently hoping to find work opportunities in either game audio/sound design, film composition or sound design, or live performance.

Originally from the Isle of Man, I have formed and performed in a number of ensembles and bands since picking up the drums at the age of 12.  Following my high school education, I studied Contemporary and Popular Music at Newcastle University, specialising in performance.

After completing my undergraduate with a First Class Honours degree, I took a year out of education, and found myself drawn to the field of sound design.  Enrolling on the MSc Sound Design course at the University of Edinburgh was the next step I took towards furthering my skills in this area.

I hope you find my portfolio enjoyable.  Any queries, please feel free to email me at mparkesmusic@gmail.com, or contact me via either Instagram or LinkedIn (links provided above).

Sound Design
The Witch's Chores
The Witch's Chores

Above is a short, interactive environment created using the softwares Wwise and Unity.  The player controls a witch, and has to complete a number of household chores, a narrative which I created to encourage player exploration.  My area of focus on this project was that of creating a semi-realistic sonic aesthetic which could be interacted with rather than making a game.

Animated Shorts

Below are two animated shorts created by a friend which I created the sound design for.

Left - 'Neck Crack', made using sounds sourced from third party libraries

Right - 'Party Text', made using both sounds recorded and edited myself, and sound from third party libraries

JUCE Plug-in

This is a virtual instrument I created using the audio software, JUCE.  It was written using the coding language C++.  I modelled this instrument using the Roland Juno-60 Analog Synthesiser as a source of inspiration.  It features three separate oscillators (one sawtooth, two square-waves, one of which is pitched an octave below the other), an ADSR envelope, low-pass and high-pass filters (low-pass is also modulated using an ADSR envelope), an LFO which affects both the oscillator signals and the pulse width of the square-wave oscillators, and a chorus effect.

Composition
Journey - Cue 1, 'The Call of Adventure'
Cues for 'Journey'

A selection of compositions I created for the 2012 video game, 'Journey'.  Please be aware that there is a few seconds of silence at the start and end of each video to allow the music to fade in and out.
