Esme is an aspiring designer and maker based in the north west of England. She learned to sew when she was young and has since been working in garment and bridal alterations for over five years. She has a passion for both designing and making, with a particular interest in costume illustration.
The first of my two graduate projects, my redesign of the classic Aardman animation Chicken Run (2000), is a playful adaptation for stage. From the perspective of the main protagonist Ginger, the plot remains true to the original film, following a band of anthropomorphic chickens doomed to a life of egg-laying on a Yorkshire chicken farm. When Rocky, a flamboyant American rooster, arrives on the scene, the hens hope he can teach them to fly to freedom. However, when farmers, Mr and Mrs Tweedy, install a chicken pie- making machine, their need becomes urgent, and they must devise other means of escape. My designs mostly take inspiration from 1940s war uniforms and 1960s workwear with my final costume make drawing heavily upon the Land Army silhouettes of WW2 and the factory overalls of 1960s female factory workers.
The second of my two graduate projects, my adaptation of J. M. Barrie’s beloved tale Peter Pan, is set during the beginning of the Second World War. Following Peter, a bomber pilot, and his friends (the Lost Boys), the narrative plays out in tandem to letters written by Peter’s childhood sweetheart, Wendy. In her letters, she details the meeting between a girl with a curiosity for adventure and a boy who refuses to grow old.
