Project Description

Museum Nouveau is a reimagining of what museums could be; a new typology that utilises the built environment to educate people about the past.

It is a design intervention, that brings the educational value and curious atmosphere of a museum out of an institution and into the public sphere. It aims to change people’s perspective on their surroundings, allowing them new understanding of familiar sights. The design aims to create a disruption in the urban environment, to get people’s attention, and spark intrigue. It focuses heavily on user experience, intending to curate a memorable and engaging experience through how the user interacts with the structure.

The design seeks to change people’s mental perspective by changing their physical perspective. It raises their point of view, either through a raised view platform or through periscopes. The viewing platform is accessible via spiral staircase, with an acrylic overlay at the top to offer additional information about the view. The periscopes allow a raised point of view for people who cannot access stairs, and have interactive information displays next to them.

The structural design has two main components; an external skin of bent plywood which provides the silhouette, and an internal skeleton of steel, which supports the viewing platform and staircase. I have created a 1:10 scale model, to demonstrate the full design, and a section of it at full scale to facilitate interaction.
