Paula is an aspiring costume designer and maker born and raised in the Finnish countryside. She gained life and work experience in Copenhagen before relocating to Edinburgh to study costume design. As a fan of fantasy, Paula's work is often inspired by her love for nature and enthusiasm to learn about different cultures.
Fantasy Novel by Samantha Shannon
Ead Duryan, a fire mage
My first graduate design project is a television adaption of Samantha Shannon's high fantasy novel The Priory of the Orange Tree (2019), which takes inspiration from Elizabethan England, Edo Period Japan and Safavid Persia to correspond to the story's three significant locations, and includes elements from WW1 uniforms. The production heavily explores the themes of cultural beliefs, such as myths and religion, and feminism.
Icelandic Folktale
Hildur, the Elven Queen
My second graduate design project is a stage adaptation of a tragic Icelandic folktale, Hildur, Queen of the Elves. It takes inspiration from Icelandic national costumes, the country's mesmerising nature and local animals. The production explores Icelandic mythology and traditions, and the impending destruction of nature.
