Root is an interdisciplinary designer with a background in industrial design. He joined the D4C programme to explore the potential of utilising design in a wider context. His design projects combine research methods from ecology, psychology and sociology.

 

Sensory Wandering: Guidance for reinventing symbiosis future

Sensory Wandering is a walking art project. It leads the public to reflect on their relationship with nature by engaging them in outdoor multi-sensory walks in natural and urban areas. The research explores the ecopsychological imperative to increase nature-relatedness by engaging with it. Using this as a design opportunity, a culture probe kit was designed and used as a vehicle for breaching experiments using sensory conflict, which can shock experience norms. The walking activity aims to lead people to revisit and redefine natural associations through the cognitive impact of sensory conflict behaviours. It awakens the biophilic nature of human beings and enhances their ecological perception, thus promoting the emergence of environmental protection awareness and behaviour to build a sustainable symbiotic future.

Atlantic Salmon: Slow Food in the Artificial Nature

Throughout the history of aquaculture, salmon and humans have formed a two-way domesticated co-existence. Salmon farming demonstrates how a species can grow alongside humans and reveals the role and responsibility of humans in the ecology of the planet. How this entanglement can then be translated into action, and wider understanding through design is the focus of my exploration in this project. My intravention aims to present salmon farming to consumers as an exercise in the Slow Food movement.

In Praise of Shadow: Storybook of Interrogation Techniques

This storybook presents the reader with a tale of the praise of shadow through a series of discussions and design reflections on the technical intermediaries of light. It invites the viewer to reflect on everyday ways of living, to give back the darkness to nature and to explore the beauty of the balance of light and shadow in the darkness. In turn, it awakens energy awareness and reorients the relationship between people and technology.

Design fiction: Carbon Monitoring Dystopia

I paid attention to the rising temperature in the IPCC report and came up with a design fiction through dystopian design thinking. I constructed a future world with theoretical support and found that we need to control individual carbon emissions through high-pressure monitoring means. A carbon management system was designed in which people's daily carbon emissions behaviours will be closely monitored by AI, without any personal freedom; only by illegal carbon trading can they access more carbon allowance. I hope to guide people to realize that they do not want such a future so as to make people pay attention to the greenhouse effect and conduct energy-saving and emission-reduction behaviours.
